Combine chocolate chips, sweetened condensed milk, and butter in a microwave-safe bowl.
Microwave the mixture on high for 45 seconds, then stir. Microwave an additional 30 to 60 seconds as needed until the mixture is smooth and fully melted, stirring after each interval.
Stir in vanilla extract and salt until combined. Fold in chopped walnuts if using.
