Let’s embark on this delicious journey where classic meets contemporary.

Prep Time: 20 minutes Cook Time: 30 minutes Total Time: 50 minutes

Ingredients

  • 1 lb ground beef
  • 1 medium onion, diced
  • 1 bell pepper, diced
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 cup ketchup
  • 2 tbsp mustard
  • 1 tbsp brown sugar
  • Salt and pepper, to taste
  • 2 cups shredded cheddar cheese
  • 1 can (8 oz) refrigerated crescent roll dough or biscuit dough

Directions

  1. Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
  2. In a large skillet over medium-high heat, brown the ground beef, breaking it up with a spatula as it cooks. Once browned, drain any excess fat.
  3. Add the diced onion and bell pepper to the skillet. Cook until they soften, about 3-4 minutes.
  4. Stir in the minced garlic, and cook for an additional minute.
  5. Add the ketchup, mustard, and brown sugar to the skillet, mixing well. Season with salt and pepper, then let the mixture simmer for about 5 minutes, allowing the flavors to meld.
  6. Transfer the sloppy joe mixture to a casserole dish (around 9×13 inches).
  7. Sprinkle the shredded cheddar cheese evenly over the top of the sloppy joe mixture.
  8. Carefully unroll the crescent roll or biscuit dough and lay it over the top of the cheese, covering the casserole.
  9. Place the casserole in the preheated oven and bake for 15-20 minutes, or until the dough is golden brown and cooked through.

Notes

  • For added flavor, consider incorporating a splash of Worcestershire sauce or a dash of chili powder into the sloppy joe mixture.
  • Vegetables such as corn or diced tomatoes can also be mixed into the beef for added texture and flavor.
