Macaroni, ground beef, worcestershire sauce, cheddar cheese, and other ingredients go into creating the old-fashioned delicacy known as goulash.

Classic goulash from back in the day is one of the best retro dishes I’ve ever had. I learned this recipe from my mother and I am familiar with every step of the process. A goulash made in the old-fashioned way is a hearty recipe that the whole family can enjoy on any night of the week. This recipe is completely unique; it has a fantastic flavor and aroma, can be prepared in under an hour, and requires only a few basic ingredients and steps.

Trying this recipe for the first time, I was nervous that I would ruin dinner for my family. I was worried that if I made a mistake, we wouldn’t have dinner and would go to bed hungry. I called mom for a quick rundown on how to make this dish, got to work, and it was ready in no time.

To my amazement, it came out perfectly, as if I’d been making this dish for years. My family has relied on this recipe ever since, especially on the Sunday after Thanksgiving when we break old-fashioned goulash like we do bread in church.

Ingredients:

Macaroni, elbow shape, 1 pound

2 pounds of beef ground

1 small onion, chopped finely

garlic, 3 whole cloves, minced

Worchestershire sauce, 1 tablespoon

2 cans of crushed tomatoes

The contents of 2 small cans of diced tomatoes

Seasoning: 1 1/2 Tablespoons Italian

SALT: 2 tsp

1/2 teaspoon of pepper

Shredded Cheddar Cheese equal to 1 Cup

Instructions:

Step 1:

Make sure your oven is at least halfway up to temperature (at least 350 degrees F). Put some water in a big pot and bring it to a boil. Then, drain the macaroni and cook it for 3 minutes less than the package suggests.

Step 2:

Place the ground beef and onions in a large skillet and cook over high heat. The beef should be broken up and cooked for about 6-7 minutes, or until it is browned; then the fat should be drained.

Step 3:

Stir in the garlic and cook for 1 minute, or until the flavor is developed. Then, stir in the tomato paste, tomato sauce, and diced tomatoes until everything is well blended.

Step 4:

Italian seasoning, salt, and pepper to taste, and stir to combine.

Step 5:

Throw in some cheddar cheese and macaroni and cheese once it’s done cooking. Transfer to a casserole dish and bake for 20-25 minutes, or until bubbly and cheese is melted.

Step 6:

Take them out of the oven, and you’re ready to serve.
