On Christmas morning, my mother has always prepared this for us, and the fact that we only have it once a year adds to the specialness of the occasion. Everyone delights in eating it because of how tasty it is.
INGREDIENTS :
Cheddar cheese, mild, 8 ounces, shredded Cheddar
1 pound of pork sausage made from ground pork
6 slices of white bread, toasted and cubed before being toasted.
1 teaspoon mustard powder
2 cups milk
1/2 teaspoon salt
4 eggs, beaten
Directions :
Crumble sausage into a medium skillet. Cook over medium heat until the meat is golden brown all over, then drain.
Combine the ground mustard, the salt, the eggs, and the milk in a bowl of medium size. After adding the sausage, bread cubes, and cheese, stir everything together so that it is evenly coated. Pour into a baking dish that is 9 by 13 inches and has been greased. Cover and place in the refrigerator to chill for at least eight hours or up to overnight.
Set the temperature in the oven to 350 degrees F. (175 degrees C).
Bake for 45 to 60 minutes with the lid on. Remove the cover and bring the temperature down to 325 degrees Fahrenheit (165 degrees C). Continue baking for an additional half an hour, or until the center is firm.
